SWABIAN ALB – ALLGÄU
IT GREENS SO BEAUTIFULLY AT THE GRÜNTEN

For all those for whom our 3-day tour across the Swabian Alb still seems a little too local from a geographical point of view, here we have the appropriate extension: first across the Swabian Alb, then across Upper Swabia and the Donaubergland off into the beautiful Allgäu and back!

This absolute titbit and appetiser is also intended to make entering the world of roadbookTouren as easy as possible! No long journey to the destination, no tyre conversion to thick studs and no tricky navigation tasks. For this wonderful tour, we are taking over routes from the jack-of-all-trades and long-time motorbike editor Werner “Mini” Koch, who knows the region and routes like the back of his hand as a passionate MTB and enduro rider. We will be joined in the Allgäu by Sam, who will take on the role of tour guide. This way, the route can be adapted individually – or according to the weather conditions – and no one will be overtaxed.

The tour is not so much aimed at the wild enduro bikers – with this tour we want to draw attention to how beautiful it is in our area and what an ingenious network of (gravel) paths there still is to ride legally here!

ITINERARY

DAY 1: Individual arrival at the starting point in Weilheim/Teck by 10.30 am. Saying hello, a short welcome and a few words about group riding. At 11.00 a.m. we set off for the heights of the Swabian Alb. The tour leads along narrow, small asphalt roads or gravel paths criss-crossing the Alb towards the Danube valley. We will stop for lunch in Oberschwaben. Towards afternoon, we turn east into the Swabian Allgäu. Our accommodation for the next two nights is beautifully situated at the Niedersonthofener See with a view of the Oberstdorf Alps.

DAY 2: Today at the latest, seasoned enduro and motorbike riders will realise that there are sensationally beautiful landscapes and routes here “at home” and that you definitely don’t always have to go abroad. We start in the direction of the Grünten, then follow the valleys and rivers in the Unterallgäu to the sources of the Mindel and Günz. On unbelievably beautiful, small roads and adventurous gravel paths, we make a loop through the Alpine foothills with magnificent views of mountain ranges from the Tannheimer Tal to the Zugspitze.

DAY 3: On the third day, depending on the weather and our wishes, we can choose from various routes for the return journey, but always with a minimum of traffic and seclusion. Back to our starting point at the foot of the Alb, we will be around 4pm.

TOTAL DISTANCE

Approximately 600 kilometers, 30% Off-Road, day stages 200 – 250 kilometers.

ROUTE

The loop leads over narrow, small asphalt roads or gravel paths criss-crossing the Swabian Alb, Danube valley and Upper Swabia towards the Allgäu. Even in wet weather, the route is passable with good riding experience on normal road enduro tyres and large touring enduros. If the ground is too soggy, we will avoid the critical sections.

DRIVING SKILLS

The gravel sections of this tour have been selected so that they can be ridden by endurists with heavy machines. Off-road experience in the form of a training course or completed gravel kilometres is certainly helpful, but not absolutely necessary. Not to be underestimated, however, are the really small roads where you swing from bend to bend all day. So, solid basic driving skills, good cornering technique and ultimately stamina are required. Not a tour for absolute beginners!

TIRES

We are partly on gravel roads, but not on the “Dakar”. With the serial tire the non-asphalted sections are thus easily feasible. Should it rain, we may take detours for some off-road passages.

GROUP DRIVING

The gravel roads of this tour are so selected that they can be driven by endurists with adventure bikes. Off-road experience in the form of a course or completed gravel kilometer is certainly helpful, but not absolutely necessary. Not to be underestimated are however the really small streets, where you swing the whole day from curve to curve. So, solid basic driving, good cornering technique and ultimately also endurance are required. No tour for absolute beginners!

Complete protective clothing. We recommend enduro boots and a functional and well ventilated motorcycle clothing, the knee pads can stay at home.
